Chapter 11
Caleb dropped him off at the farmhouse later, and Frankie reluctantly got out of the car after collecting a long kiss. He sighed as he plodded up to the porch, wishing that he could have stayed at Caleb’s house for the night. But unfortunately his boyfriend had to work tonight, and besides all of his clothes and other things were here at the farm house. Besides, they’d barely been dating for like two weeks – sleeping at Caleb’s house would be too much like moving in. It was way too early for that, he supposed. It was just that going back to the ‘bosom of his family’ depressed him. He knocked at the front door, which was yanked open a moment later to reveal Seth standing in the doorway.
His cousin leered at him. “Just getting back, cuz?” he asked in an insinuating tone of voice. “Got you some, huh? Lucky bastard.”
Frankie sighed as he stepped into the warm interior of the farm house. It's none of your business, Seth,” he pointed out acerbically.
Seth slammed the door behind them. “No, I suppose it isn’t,” he conceded. “But I’d still like some details.”
“Well, you aren’t getting any,” Frankie replied tartly. “I’m going up to bed.”
“What, no dinner?” Seth asked behind him.
Frankie paused to look over his shoulder at his insouciant cousin. “No, I ate earlier,” he replied.
Seth grinned. “Bet you did,” he agreed.
Frankie rolled his eyes and climbed the stairs, leaving a grinning Seth standing in the living room behind him. God help him and protect him from his family, he thought in disgust.
Jordan smiled at him as he sat down next to his new friend. “Morning, Frankie,” he said. He eyed Frankie thoughtfully. “Was it good?” he asked, his eyes gleaming.
Frankie stopped in the act of opening his laptop. “Oh, not you too!” he exclaimed in a hiss.
Jordan lifted his brows. “Me, too?”
Frankie sighed, rubbing his forehead. “Sorry. It’s just my cousin was bugging me last night to give him details about my evening with Caleb,” he told his new friend.
“Oh, I see. Sorry if I came off sounding like that,” Jordan said apologetically. “It's just that I can see that you must have…err…got some last night,” he said delicately. “I don’t need the details, I’m just happy for you.”
“Thanks,” Frankie said. “Caleb is…pretty awesome, I must admit. He’s one of the few good things about my move here. In fact, without him I’d probably be insane by now just from living with the Joads.”
Jordan chuckled. “Hot new boyfriend versus crazy family? Sounds like a reality TV program.”
Frankie laughed too. “It does, doesn’t it? Anyway, are you guys still practicing today? I’d like to come and watch you again, if you don’t mind.”
“Not at all,” Jordan replied. “I’d love an audience. I am an actor, after all.”
“Cool,” Frankie replied, switching on his laptop.
Two days later, Frankie was sitting in his usual spot watching Jordan and his fellow actors doing their rehearsal. The play was in a few days, and they were all intent on getting ready. Jordan was really good, Frankie thought to himself. He could sing (in a near-perfect tenor voice), and his acting kills were pretty amazing, too. Add to that how handsome he was, and Jordan was definitely going to make it in Hollywood. Frankie was enjoying himself. The only cloud in his sky was the fact that Caleb couldn’t pick him up. The beginning of his sexual drought started today, and he wasn’t looking forward to this weekend any more than he had the last one. Less, in fact, because he now had a hot boyfriend who was great in bed. Instead of getting to fuck Caleb, he got to mope around the farm house for the next few days instead.
In fact, he was waiting for Seth to arrive and pick him up. His cousin was late as usual, the lazy, useless bum. Probably busy fucking some random guy and had forgotten all about Frankie. He’d ask Jordan for a ride home instead if Seth forgot him completely. For now, he simply relaxed and watched the rehearsal.
Somebody sat down beside him. He glanced over to see his ride sprawling in the chair. “About time you got here, Seth,” he said in a low voice, exasperation in his tone. “I thought you’d forgotten about me.”
“Now how could I do that?” Seth said cheerfully. “I just got distracted, is all.”
“Uh huh. Did you get your ‘distraction’s’ name?” he drawled.
“Sure did. It was Greg.” Seth replied in a satisfied voice.
Frankie rolled his eyes and sighed. “Why am I not surprised?” he said to the air.
Seth shrugged. “What can I say? At least I finally got here.”
“Oh, yay,” Frankie huffed.
“Hey, better late than never, cuz,” Seth pointed out with a charming grin.
Frankie made a “pfft,” noise, but said nothing else. The rehearsal was over, and Jordan came down off the stage and began making his way toward the two of them.
“So what did you think, Frankie?” he asked.
“It was great,” Frankie replied truthfully. “Jordan, this is my second cousin Seth Starke. Seth, this is my friend Jordan, “he said, making the introduction.
“Hi,” Jordan said to Seth. “Frankie’s told me a lot about you, Seth. It’s nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you, too,” Seth said, and something in his voice made Frankie glance at him. His cousin’s face wore a look of predatory interest as he gazed up at Jordan’s handsome face. He rolled his eyes. He should have known.
Jordan smiled slightly. ‘I was thinking, Frankie,” he said, his eyes going to his friend’s face, “That we might do something together this weekend, since I know that Caleb’s working so you won’t get to see him. Would you like to just hang out with me?”
“I’d love to,” Frankie replied gratefully.
Seth clearly didn’t like to be left out of this conversation. He leaned forward in his chair. “I’ve got nothing to do this weekend, either,” he said loudly. “Could I tag along with you guys?”
Jordan glanced at him dismissively. “Sure, I suppose,” he said, sounding as though he were humoring a begging child.
Seth looked annoyed. “Great,” he said between gritted teeth. “I’ll be there.”
Frankie looked back and forth between them. Jordan’s face was expressionless, but in the depth of his eyes Frankie thought he glimpsed a decidedly evil gleam. What was his friend up to? He wondered.
“Anyway, we’ve got to go, “he said aloud. “I’ll call you tomorrow, Jordan.”
His friend smiled at him. “Do that. I’ll see you then, Frankie,” he paused, then waved a hand at a seething Seth. “And you, too,” he went on, sounding bored.
Seth surged to his feet. He looked pissed. Frankie also leapt to his feet and grabbed his cousin’s arm. “Come on, Seth,” he said loudly. “Let’s go.”
Seth allowed himself to be dragged away, but not without sending Jordan another evil look. He was fuming as they went outside together. “What a prick!” he exclaimed at the top of his lungs.
Frankie, who was still trying to deal with the cold, glanced at him. “Jordan’s a pretty good guy, actually,” he said defensively.
Seth snorted. “He may be a hottie, but he’s also a douche bag,” he snarled.
“Why? Because he rejected your blatant advances?” Frankie asked dryly.
Seth gave him a cold look as they climbed into his rust bucket of a car. “Well, he’s obviously too hung up on you to care about ME,” he muttered as he started the engine.
Frankie sighed. “Seth, Jordan is not interested in me,” he said in irritation. “Well he WAS, but now we’re just friends.”
“Yeah, right. Like a guy who’s had the hots for you is just gonna want to be your friend,” Seth drawled.
“Maybe in your world, that’s true. But where I come from – planet Earth – guys can be friends if they don’t hook up. I know its all sex for you, Seth…which is frankly just sad…. But it isn’t always for the rest of us. Maybe Jordan just isn’t interested in you.”
Seth looked skeptical. “Oh come on, now, cuz,” he said, waving a hand at himself. “What’s not to like?”
Frankie refrained from rolling his eyes again only with difficulty. “Well, there is the whole ‘man-whore’ thing,” he said as Seth pulled out of the parking lot. “That might have turned him off.”
“I’d think that’d be the biggest draw, actually,” Seth remarked.
Frankie couldn’t help himself – he rolled his eyes. “Please don’t forget that I turned you down because of that fact, Seth.”
“Well, I just figured that you’d had your head turned already by our neighbor,” he pointed out. “I can admit to being able to see what the attraction is there. But that Jordan guy ain’t seein’ anybody, is he?”
“Not that I know of,” Frankie replied.
“So what’s the problem? If he isn’t hung up on you, that is.”
Frankie gave up. There was no way that he could make Seth understand that there might be guys out there who just weren’t interested in him even if they weren’t dating somebody else. “I don’t know,” he said aloud. “Maybe you should ask him that yourself.”
“I’ll be sure to,” Seth replied. “Tomorrow.”
Frankie sighed, trudging along through the Mall of America. He would have been enjoying himself, except for the fact that his two companions were fighting. He thought longingly of the last time he’d been here, with Caleb. He rolled his eyes as he heard Seth’s voice snap: “You do know that Frankie has a boyfriend, right?”
He heard Jordan’s voice drawl: “Of course I know that.”
“Yeah, and he’s like ten times hotter than YOU,” Seth snarled.
Frankie winced as his friend replied frostily: “Yes, I know that too. I’ve seen him, remember?”
“Well, then, why are you still running after my cousin?” Seth demanded rudely.
He turned around to try to shut Seth up, seeing that his cousin was standing there not moving with his arms folded across his chest, glaring at an unruffled Jordan. His friend spoke just as he turned. “I don’t know what’s given you that idea, but I’m not interested in Frankie as anything but a friend anymore.”
Seth snorted like a horse. “Sure you’re not,” he said sardonically.
Frankie debated what to say to break this up, but Jordan beat him to the punch. “Listen, I can understand what’s happening here,” he said, looking down his nose at Seth. “Its called transference. You still want Frankie, so you think that everybody else does, too. But I can tell you right now that he’ll never be interested in ‘trailer trash’.”
Seth turned red with anger as Frankie opened his mouth to protest Jordan’s abrasive speech. But the actor beat him to the punch once again. “I doubt that Frankie would ever want anything to do with a spoiled child who will spread his legs for anything that moves - including, I’m sure, certain well hung farm animals.” his voice was sneering, and his eyes raked over Seth coldly.
“You fucker,” Seth growled, taking a step toward Jordan with his hands balled into fists. Frankie felt worry turn to fear; Seth looked murderous.
Jordan sniffed, clearly not seeing the danger he was in. “No, I’m not. You just wish that I was, so that you could get laid again. But like Frankie, I’m not into man-sluts.”
Seth swung his hand at Jordan’s handsome face, which made Frankie cry out. But the actor ducked with admirable swiftness and skill, and got in an upper cut of his own. Seth went down on the floor, hitting his ass hard. One hand went to his bruised jaw, as Frankie yelled: “Stop it, both of you! Seth, are you okay?” he asked anxiously, kneeling down next to his cousin.
Seth was cradling his jaw. He was staring up at Jordan with a strange expression on his face. It wasn’t anger, exactly; Frankie couldn’t quite interpret it. “I’m fine,” he husked.
Frankie looked from his friend to his cousin in perplexity. Jordan’s face was unreadable. He found himself getting angry on Seth’s behalf. “Jordan, you shouldn’t have done that!” he snapped. “And you shouldn’t have called Seth those things, either. He’s not trailer trash and he’s not a man-slut.”
Jordan looked chagrined. He started to say something to Frankie, but Seth spoke just then. “No, he’s right, Frankie,” he said, climbing slowly to his feet.
“But Seth…” Frankie began unhappily.
His cousin smiled painfully at him. “Hey, you have to accept the truth,” he said dryly. “Even if you don’t like it.”
Jordan sighed. “Look, I’m sorry,” he began. “You just hit on a sore spot, that’s all. I have to admit that I’m jealous of Frankie’s boyfriend - he is amazingly gorgeous. I’m not used to having competition, especially competition like THAT. I knew I couldn’t win the minute I saw him come to pick Frankie up. I’ll admit I did have a faint hope before,” he told a startled Frankie ruefully, “But after I saw Caleb I resigned myself to us just being friends. So when your cousin started in on me about still liking you, I got mad. Because he hit so close to the truth,” he added with a shrug. “But you’re right, I shouldn’t have said those things to him, even though I was angry. I apologize,” he told Seth.
Seth smirked, something that had to be hard for him with a bruised jaw. “Told you,” he said to Frankie smugly. “Guys can’t be friends with other guys they think are hot.”
Frankie wanted to roll his eyes in exasperation. “Actually, you’ve been proven wrong already,” he replied tartly. “Because we’re friends, right? And you’ve hit on me enough times that I KNOW you think I’m hot.”
Jordan drawled: “Touché,” in amusement. “For Frankie’s sake, let’s just try to get along,” he said to Seth. “Okay?” he held out his open hand to Seth to shake.
His cousin considered that hand for a moment, then took it and shook it firmly. “You’ve got a deal,” he remarked. “But you won’t hold it against me if I keep trying to get into your pants?”
Jordan looked startled, then amused again. “No, I won’t,” he replied, which made Frankie breathe a sigh of relief.
